The founder of this event, Olivia Rourke, was a Walkerton District Community School student who died in an automobile accident near London, Ontario along with three of her teammates – Danica Baker, Kaydance Ford, and Rowan McLeod — and teacher-coach Mat Eckert on May 23, 2025. They were travelling home from a high school softball tournament.

To honour her mom who was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2023, Olivia decided to merge two of her loves - basketball and her mom - and try to raise money for breast cancer care & research through a 3 on 3 basketball tournament scheduled for June 7, 2025. Despite Olivia's untimely death the tournament was held with the tremendous support of the WDCS staff and the Walkerton community. 

The tournament raised $10,000 for breast cancer care & research and helped to establish the Olivia Rourke Foundation. 

At this time, the foundation will focus on empowering youth-led community initiatives, advancing women in sport, and funding cancer-related charities and research. These are the places where Olivia found friendship, belonging and inspiration. It is our mission to offer the same to others in her name.
